Safe passage according to God's promises came Friday, February 3, 2006, to Mrs. Sonja Deloris Broadwater Childs at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Georgia.
Born October 5, 1939, in Silverstreet, South Carolina in Newberry County, she was the youngest of seven children of the late Samson James Broadwater, Sr. and the late Addie Williams Broadwater. Mrs. Childs joined Belmont Baptist Church at an early age. She attended Newberry County Schools where she was a graduate of Gallman High School and attended Claflin College. She worked in textiles at American Fiber and Finishing and the medical industry. She was also a member of Women's Home Aid Society #57. Mrs. Childs did a lot of charity with the American Cancer Society and was always willing to help her fellow man.
Mrs. Childs was predeceased by her husband, Columbus Douglas Childs, Jr.; daughter, Delilah M. Childs; mother-in-law,
Maude Stoddard Childs; and father-in-law, Columbus D. Childs, Sr.
Cherishing her memory are sons, Douglas Childs III and his wife, Claudia Childs of Newberry, SC, Clifton Childs and his wife, Tina Childs of Marietta, GA; daughters, Deborah Childs, Dr. Deanthia Childs Wiggins and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Wiggins, all of Marietta, GA, Denise Childs Washington and her husband, Anthony Washington of Newberry, Hiawaetha Childs of Greenwood, SC; sisters, Hestella Primus (Nathaniel) of Hartsville, SC, Saloma Davenport of Leonia, NJ, Chorsie Calhoun of Wheaton, MD; brothers, Thomas Broadwater of Norcross, GA, Burton Broadwater (Rosetta) of Hanover, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Flossie Floyd of Greenville, SC, Gloria Childs of Richmond, VA, Patricia Ferguson of Mauldin, SC; brother-in-law, Marcus Childs (Charlene) of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren, Reginald Childs, Jacinda Washington, Candace Childs, Kendra Childs, Kenneth Wiggins, III, Anthony A.
